Standards under discussion

WearIT@work addresses a large variety of standards and standardization areas relevant to the concept of wearable computing, and – based on requirements emerging from the outcome of its 4 pilot projects – may either identify extensions
to existing technology or standards applied in one of these pilots, or propose the development of entirely new standards. Consequently it will not be possible to define technical specifications or deliverables that could, or will be submitted to standards organizations upfront, until the completion of the pilots has provided
more clarity. Action steps should therefore focus on preparatory activity preced-
ing the submission of technical specifications.

Among others this implies that ongoing activity in those standards a reas wearIT@work aims to address will have to be further analyzed, and standards organizations as well as the processes they apply will have to be evaluated. Referring to the target areas listed in sections 2.3.1 through 2.3.7 are concerned, this means the following has to be taken into account:

  • Multimedia standards
  • Service standards
  • Mobile standards
  • Security standards
  • Design and working standards
  • Communication standards
  • Wearable User Interface and Interaction standards
  • Further (technical as well as procedural) evaluation of the ongoing processes listed above will have to indicate whether there could eventually be opportunities for wearIT@work to contribute to standards developed by these organizations. The results of this process should be held against the planning of the project, against the expected importance and relevance of the actual standardization output, and against the resources the project has available to do the standardization work. In addition, the Open Wearable Computing Group (OWCG)1 should be a good instrument to further early standardization activities in the wearable computing domain.
