Communication standards
Communication capabilities of wearable computers are required for audio/video
communication between mobile workers and remote assistants and to access external
data bases. Communication generally requires hardware (wireless interfaces) and
software (communication protocols). While hardware components off-the-shelf
(e.g., GSM, UMTS, WLAN, Bluetooth) are supposed to be sufficient, communication
protocols need to be enhanced or new ones need to be developed to fulfil the
requirements of wearable computing.
Research and development of communication protocols is done
in AF3.3 with the
focus on IP-based protocols, as future communication systems (whether fixed,
mobile, data or voice)
are supposed to be complete IP-based or -compatible.
IP-based protocols are standardized by the IETF. The most relevant IETF Working
Groups (WG) for communication of wearable computers
are those discussing IP
mobility (mip6, mipshop, monami6) and
ad-hoc networking (manet, autoconf).
